WOW!
I will turn all your attentions to my previous blogs where, yes folks, you heard it first from my clarevoyance! ::does the i told you so dance:: It has become a meaning of perspective. For 6 years we have seen it one way, through the eyes of Jacob "the good side". This good-side being the dictator and the one we must not even question has been telling us the otherside is bad. But what of the M.I.B's story. What if he was made out to be bad so that no one helps him out. (Its very similar to the story of Elphaba if any of you have seen WICKED. And if you havent you SHOULD) She wasnt really bad, but because she was green and dressed in dark clothing she was ostrasized. Moral: is someone born bad or just turned bad is some way. With Jacob and the MIB he genuinely just wants to go back to where he "came from" because he doesnt "belong". Sound familiar? Jack has been singing a similar tune up until he finally left in season 4.
THEY ARE TWINS!!!! I totally did not see that coming. But does shed some light on why their "mother" made it so they "cant hurt each other". This notion we may have taken too literally all this time. Maybe she meant this because they are brothers. Think about it, could you really kill/hurt your own sibling? I know I couldnt...so maybe the "loophole" the MIB has previously referred to is because neither of them could bring themselves to actually physically hurt each other because there is so much history between them.
How is it though that Jacob is able to be virtually ageless, like Richard Alpert?
Is it because of the promise he made when he drank the cup? Then where did he get his special powers (making Richard immortal, showing himself to Hurley etc)?
Was his accepting the wine a play on communion? Possible. He accepted an offering in exchange for a righteous promise.
What makes the MIB "Special"? His "mother" thought that he would inherit this job of watching the light, til the MIB rebelled. Did she think the MIB would be sort of the Prodigal Son? (read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parable_of_the_Prodigal_Son)
If you notice some of the factors that make MIB "special" we saw is that he:
-can see and talk to the dead (like Hurley)
-(kind of) "sees" things. He knew how to play the game, and knows his Wheel creation will work (similar to Desmond, kinda sorta?)
twist of irony: When you really weigh out their differences; Jacob is the one who is easily "corrupted" - although up until today we thought he was calling all the shots. And last night were shown the parallel. Jacob's fake-mom was "keeping him good" for all we know she could be a looney and thus corrupting him.
I looked up the meaning of light because i was really curious about this strange golden orb in the brook,...in the middle of the jungle. It comes from Matthew 5:16: let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father in heaven."
I cant wrap my finger around if/how this translates to any meaning in LOST or last nights episode so I throw it out to you guys and see what you make of it.
PHEW im drained and may go watch it again to see if I missed anything...
*P.s sorry i didnt post by midnight...i was exhausted and had little time left before the baby woke up for his next feeding!

Wow. Okay...So to address the twin idea. I had actually heard other people speculate this because of the biblical story of the twins Jacob and Esau, who were born of Isaac and Rebekah. For those of you who are not familiar with the story, Esau was born first, but Jacob was born holding Esau's foot...indicating that it had been a struggle between the twins as to who would be born first. Later in life, Jacob continued to prove that he wanted to be his father's heir, which is a right usually reserved for the firstborn son. Long story short- Jacob tricked Esau into trading his birthright for food, and Esau later vowed to kill Jacob. The Bible refers to Esau as immoral and unreligious. So..maybe this is another take on this, which could be the reason that the writers still have not given us the name of the MIB (it would give it away too easily).
ReplyDeleteI don't think that the reason they they cannot kill each other is because they are brothers and do not actually want to. I think that there is more to it. I am sort of confused here, though-- Didn't Jacob sort of kill the MIB by pushing him down into the light-filled cave? And the smoke is is soul? Claudette, you mentioned that Jacob is ageless like Richard, but I think MIB is, too...? And he did not drink the communion wine, that we know if, so I am not sure if it is that. I don't know... I can't wait for the finale! How many are left?
Yeah, so after watching it again with my husband he has a MUCH BETTER analysis of what is going on than i did. Ill wait and let you see when he posts later. I may be way off after hearing his side. Although i will STICK to my conviction that the MIB is not necessarily bad and the whole white/black thing is a means to throw us off.
ReplyDeleteMegan- i LOVE your idea of the Biblical Twins...totally throws my Prodigal Son theory out the window! Although i will say this. Thus far we have really payed attention in CCD to be able to bring up all these biblical references!
And to answer your question next week is the LAST episode before the 2.5hr final on Sunday May 23rd at 7pm
I felt a little 'eh' about this episode during and immediately after. There was some pretty serious stuff that went down last week, and I thought this sort of slowed things down a bit. However, I've been thinking about it a lot today, and it's growing on me. I might have to watch it again.
ReplyDeleteMIB called his mother crazy a few episodes back. And she was, with her killing and manipulating and stealing babies, etc. Honestly, I was expecting her to be crazier than she was portrayed - like Rouseau or squirrel wig Claire. I think that everything she did from the time she got Jacob and Baby in Black (and maybe even before then) was to release herself as the island's guardian. Her worldview about other people was pretty clear: They are all bad. So it would make perfect sense to take some babies and raise one or both of them to take over for her so they couldn't be corrupted. There was something very mystical about her and all of her magic spells. I wonder how long she had been there? That job doesn't seem very fun for anyone who does it.
I think some of the overall themes of Lost were presented here. Particularly Science vs Faith. Jacob growing up was faithful to his mother, while MIB was much more skeptical with his looking out over the ocean and questioning things. They also touched on a little bit of free will and destiny. Fake mom couldn't keep MIB from leaving her, and she claimed that it was his choice. But in the end she forced Jacob to become her successor, and it seems like she manipulated MIB into killing her. So, does free will exist? Or is everyone who ends up on the island manipulated by some other force? Also, a whole lot of baby stealing happens on this island. Jacob and BIB, Alex, and Aaron. Weird.
And then Jacob threw MIB down that magic light hole. Fake mom told him never to go down there. She said it was worse than dying. How did she know? Did she see someone else do it?
Claudette, I think you're probably right about the good vs evil thing not being so cut and dried. MIB wants off the island, and he's trying everything he can think of to do it. Just like Fake Mom. I felt sympathy for her and understand her actions. I feel more sympathy more MIB than before. But I guess the big question is what the eff happens if he escapes? And while I didn't really care about MIB's original people that Fake Mom killed, I take issue with him going after folks I've been invested in for six years.
And what does Widmore have to do with all of this?
Sevens- i think you should take over my blog. Your insight is waaaay more close to target than mine was. My husband called it "reaching". I LOVE LOVE LOVE your theory on Fake-Mom trying to raise 2 people to be free and clear of "badness and corruption" and your analysis on the whole free will vs destiny thing. I wouldnt have picked up on it. Your observation now leads me to this...
ReplyDeleteFake mom's purpose (so you pointed out) was to "be released as the islands guardian"...does this sound like a familiar plot -- A la DESMOND?! Then it brings me to: HOW long have Fake mom, Jacob and proposed "evil" twin been on that island. Clearly it was waay before Richard and he came to the island in like the late 1800's.
Yes, baby-stealing does seem to be a frequent theme. The show also seems to have some hidden agenda with children. As we saw recently when a coup-d'etat was performed on the Temple, Smoke-Locke was eerily nice to the children that were there (these two were stolen from Flight 815 almost immediatley after it crashed) and lest we NOT forget the creepiest scene of Season 1's finale that still haunts my nightmares of the creepy-OTHER-fisherman guy that "has to take the boy [walt]"
To answer your question: "is everyone on the island manipulated by some force" - YES! they are all manipulated by Jacob or one of his ambassadors.
Im glad you agree with my theory of White/Black not being so obvious. After last nights episode i am even moreso convinced. Just because MIB didnt "conform" to the lunacy that his fake mom tried to feed him doesnt make him bad. However, does it then make Jacob a mere following sheep. Is that why he treats all the others as such.
*Remember that Jacob also said he didnt "care about" the job looking after the Light Orb...is this why he keeps trying to find a candidate? Hmmm
OH AND What does widmore have to do with all this. He wants the LIGHT. He knows about it and wants it. And he's goign to use Desmonds ability to repel super-electro-magnetism to get it!
Thoughts? Reactions?
Hmm, yeah, I might just think about this show too much :) I read a lot about it, but I try to comment here before I read the recaps to see if I was on track with anything.
ReplyDeleteI think you're right about Widmore. Didn't Fake Mom say something about how when men see the light, they just want more of it and end up ultimately destroying it? Charles probably got a taste of it during his years on the island. This light sort of reminds me of the Precious from the Lord of the Rings. The ring is powerful and magical and gives long life, but corrupts those that come into contact with it, unless they are very pure of spirit. The resolution to that story was to destroy the ring, though, so I don't know how that would fit in with this magic light business, since everybody seems to want to protect it. Jacob seemed to be the more 'innocent' of the twins, so it would make sense to have him be the keeper of the island. Fake Mom didn't seem to want it to go that way. I don't know, now I'm just rambling and thinking about Frodo.
I think Jacob and MIB have been on the island for a very long time. Real mom was speaking Latin (followed by American English, whaaa?) and some have suggested that she came with ancient Romans. So that's at least 2,000 years that Jacob and MIB have been playing their game. From what we've been shown in previous episodes, people come to the island, MIB maintains that they are all inherently bad (that's one pearl of wisdom he seemed to keep from Fake Mom) and they will all be corrupted. Jacob seems to believe that he'll be able to find one good person out there to prove MIB wrong. And this person will be the candidate to take over his job? Maybe? What if they've got it all wrong? Does the island need a keeper more like MIB? Skeptical, yet not truly guilty of any wrongdoing? Someone who is aware of the realities of the world, yet able to have faith in the island itself? ...Jack?
And good call on the kid stealing. I don't know how I could have forgotten about WAAAAAAALT!
